Meeting with Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL) for the year ended 31st December 2012
Discussed in the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Entreprises on March 19th, 2015
Hon Ibrahim Semmujju chaired the meeting with the UEDCL. The procession from UEDCL comprised of Board members and the acting Accounting Officer who answered on behalf of Joseph Katera who was away in Mombasa for a training.
UEDCL was created after Unbundling of UEB in 2001 to distribute power around Uganda. However, in 2005 UMEME signed a concession with the company and took over the mandate. UEDCL was left to monitor UMEME on behalf of government and also maintain the asset register that UMEME is now using. According to UEDCL management, UMEME has invested about 134 million US$ in the electricity sector and it (UEDCL) receives UGX 500 million every month from the regulator (Electricity Regulatory authority) that monitors the investment. In other words UEDCL only performs the administrative role. In addition it also provides poles for distribution of electricity around Uganda. UEDCL employs three (3) engineers who are responsible for the entire Country.
