On 12th May, Parliament considered and passed the motion moved by Hon. Okello Bonny (MP Kole North County) to pay tribute to H.E the President Kaguta Museveni for his continuing exemplary and insightful leadership during the Corona Virus Pandemic in Uganda.

The motion passed by Parliament sought to;

  1. Pay tribute to H.E the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his exemplary, visionary, insightful and decisive leadership during the outbreak of the COVID -19 pandemic in Uganda
  2. Thank Parliament, the National and District Taskforce on the COVID -19 pandemic, Ministry of Health scientist, security for their tireless effort in working towards protecting Ugandans.
  3. Recognize the adherence of Ugandans and the private sector to H.E the President guidelines to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. Recognize the tremendous response by Ugandans and the business community to the President‘s call for contributions towards the national response to the COVID 19.

However, before August House the could embark on debating the motion, Hon. Gilbert Olanya, proposed to amend the motion to include the Rt. Hon Speaker. The member highlighted that the Speaker had equally done a great job in the fight against COVID- 19 and therefore qualified to be included in the motion. This move was, however, rejected by some of the members who were of the view that a separate motion should be brought for the Speaker and other different stakeholders.

Rising on a point of procedure, MP Kassiano Wadri challenged the motion noting that the debate was premature as the COVID-19 fight is ongoing. The member equated the motion to thanking a cook before he/she serves the food

The MPs applauded the President for the exemplary leadership as a beacon of hope in the fight against Covid-19 and other deadly viruses.
