Parliament pays tribute to businesswoman, Dr. Amina Hersi
“Amina Hersi formed 3000 women cooperatives in Northern region, I want to state that government has 34% shares in Amina’s project. It is going to benefit many Ugandans through employment, training and market.” This was a statement by Hon. Amelia Kyambadde the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives following a motion presented by Hon. Cecilia Ogwal to pay tribute to Dr. Amina Hersi a Ugandan Investor, in recognition of her award of Entrepreneur of the Year of Africa by the European CEO Magazine.
Dr Amina Hersi is a Ugandan Investor involved in the construction of Atiak Sugar Factory in Amuru District to help rebuild the local economy and create business opportunities especially for women. The factory is located in Gem Village, Pachilo Parish, Atiak sub-county, Kilak County, in Amuru District, in the Northern Region of Uganda. The sugar factory, has a capacity to crush 1,650 tonnes (1,650,000 kg) of raw cane daily, producing 66,000 tonnes (66,000,000 kg) of powder sugar annually.
Supporting the motion Hon. Robina Rwakoojo observed that “ many times we have achievers we don’t recognize, Dr. Amina Hersi brought happiness to the faces of women in Northern Uganda, and when we say women we mean that their achievements pass on to children and fathers,”
Hon. Nantaba Ida Erios in her submission to the motion raised concerns over sexual harassment, low pay and environmental degradation synonymous with sugar plantation. She asked Dr. Amina Hersi to champion Human rights and Environmental democracy.
Parliament unanimously passed the motion by Hon. Cecilia Ogwal to pay tribute to Dr. Amina Hersi a Ugandan Investor, in recognition of her award of Entrepreneur of the Year of Africa by the European CEO Magazine
