Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture Interface with the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
On the 14th of January 2020, the team from NARO led by the Director-General Dr. Ambrose Agona, met with the Parliamentary committee on agriculture to present the agency’s budget framework paper for the financial year 2020/2021 and also highlight NARO’s performance from July to December 2019. The team highlighted the budget shortfalls to agricultural research saying that NARO is allocated only 0.2276% of the national budget.
The Director-General also called for increased budgetary allocations to the agency to the desired levels of UGX 154.89 Billion. For Financial Year 2019/2020, the Director-General informed the committee that for the monies released, there was an absorption capacity of 86% by NARO. Some of the key interventions proposed for FY 2020/2021 include generation of agricultural technologies and strengthening agricultural research; vaccines research and development; upscaling clean seed production and multiplication; increased value addition through incubation; Research to broaden the application of forestry products in pulp and paper; capacity building for food and feed safety research among others.
