Statement by Minister of Finance on World Population Day
The State Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED) Hon. David Bahati told the August House that Uganda would be joining the international community to observe the World Population Day on July 11th of June 2019. He added that Uganda has been observing this day since 1989,using the occasion to raise awareness, and mobilize commitment and support among the country’s political leadership, civil society, the private sector, donor community, academia, the media and the general public, for the country’s population issues that need to be addressed.
He noted that the World Population Day is always used to take stock of the achievements made towards improving the quality of life and standard of living of the people of Uganda, and to reflect on the challenges that confront the country regarding its population concerns, with a view of addressing them. This year’s celebrations would be held in Adjumani District in West Nile Region, Uganda under the theme: Renewing the Promise: Empowering Uganda’s Youth to Drive Socio-Economic Transformation
The minister assured the house that this year’s focus would be on empowering the youth as an engine of growth of our economy and to ensure Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and realization of the vision 2040 of becoming an ‘Upper middle-income country by 2040’ as well as the harnessing of the Demographic Dividend. He highlighted that the Demographic Dividend was the optimized relationship between population growth and accelerated economic growth, and that the mentioned demographic dividends were hinged on key and strategic public investments in critical areas like infrastructure, education, and health.
