Statement on the alleged assassination attempt on Hon Nantaba and the death of Ssebulime Ronald

Today 3rd April 2019, Gen Odongo Jeje, Minister for Internal Affairs presented a preliminary statement on the alleged assassination attempt on Hon. Nantaba Aidah Etios and the death of Ssebulime Ronald. He noted that, the submissions were preliminary because investigations were still going on; and that he would subsequently make a full statement once investigations are completed.  Hon. Odongo on behalf of government expressed deep condolences to the family and relatives of the late Ronald Ssebulime.

He revealed that what was so far known, was that Hon.Nantaba, Minister of State for Information and Communications Technology and National Guidance, and Woman Member of Parliament for Kayunga District, on 24th of March 2019 at about 11:30am reported to Naggalama Police Station what she suspected to be an attempt to assassinate her. This occurred while she was driving back to Kampala from Kayunga in her official motor vehicle registration number UG 0037N, a Toyota Prado.

He noted that Mr Ronald Ssebulime was killed after being arrested by police and that they were now treating that as murder. He disclosed that a team of detectives from CID Headquarters and Kampala Metropolitan Police had been constituted to carry out the investigations and so far statements had been taken from various witnesses. The Minister further disclosed that arrests of police officers Corporal Sali David, Police Constable Opira Ronald and Police Constable Bagonza Ronald had been arrested as suspects in the murder of Ssebulime Ronald.

The Minister informed the house that a Cabinet Sub-committee chaired by the Minister of lnternal Affairs that had been formed to manage the investigations was to establish facts of questions including, if indeed there was an attempt to assassinate Hon Nantaba, who was or were the perpetrators of this attempted assassination, the conduct of the police officers involved in the whole situation from the time Hon Nantaba reported attempt on her life; and if there is any other matter relevant to this investigation.
