Where is the Speaker of Parliament? Legislators ask.
A section of the MPs has demanded to know the whereabouts of the Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah.
In a Plenary sitting chaired by Deputy Speaker Anita Among on Wednesday, July 21 2021, Joseph Ssewungu, the Kalungu West MP raised a procedural matter saying that MPs have a right to know the fate of the Head of the Institution.
Ssewungu noted that for close to two months the Speaker has not been seen in public and there are concerns from the public about his whereabouts. He appealed to the Deputy Speaker to provide answers to parliament on Oulanyah’s whereabouts.
“We want to know what is the fate of the Speaker of Parliament. We are 529 MPs, even if he is down we must know that he is down. When Speaker emeritus Rebecca Kadaga was sick one time, MPs were informed. None of us is coming out to give the public what is happening to the Speaker; Hon. Ssewungu.” Ssewungu said.
Kilak South MP, Gilbert Olanya noted that the Speaker’s absence was questionable. He said that constituencies in Northern Ugandan are concerned about the whereabouts of the Speaker. He demanded information about the Speaker.
The Deputy Speaker was, however, non-committal of the whereabouts of the Speaker. She noted that there was no vacuum in the institution.
Parliament spokesperson Chris Obore on 22nd June 2021, dismissed reports that speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah was critically ill and needs to be airlifted abroad for specialized treatment.
“The Speaker is well and having time with his children at home. He has been in campaigns for more than a year. A family is as important as a national duty.” said Obore.
Obore further noted that pomp was not Oulanyah’s style of work, but rather the speaker had decided to run the institution of Parliament where the deputy speaker’s office is respected.
“Speaker Oulanyah promised the country that it is not about him as the individual but parliament as an institution. He is in touch with his deputy and they run the show together. Pomp is not his style.”
